Shielded pools: constantly improving privacy

Zcash has evolved through different privacy pools, each with substantial improvements in efficiency and security:

  • Sapling (2018): Its arrival marked a before and after by making cryptographic proofs light enough to run from mobile devices. With it, privacy ceased to be exclusive to full nodes and became a tool accessible to all.

  • Orchard (2022): With the NU5 update came the Orchard shielded payment protocol, which uses the Halo 2 zero-knowledge proof-of-stake system that improves the performance and scalability of digital payments. Orchard is accessed using the Unified Addresses implemented with NU5, which simplify the way users manage their shielded transactions.

Unified Addresses: one key for multiple accesses

Before the advent of Unified Addresses (UA), Zcash users had to decide which address to use, depending on whether they wanted to receive funds in a shielded pool or in a transparent address. With UAs, everything was simplified:

  • A single address allows receiving funds of any type.

  • Internally, the chain decides which pool to use based on the compatibility of the sender.

  • The adoption of shielded transactions is facilitated without additional friction.

UAs have made privacy a natural process, removing any technical barriers that might discourage its use.

Diversified Addresses: a step towards absolute discretion

Although UAs already represent a huge advance, there was still a problem: sharing the same unified address across all interactions can allow a user's payments to be linked. To solve this, Diversified Addresses appeared, allowing multiple aliases to be generated from the same spending key.

How do they work?

  • A unique variant of the UA is created using a mathematical identifier called diversifier.

  • Each alias is impossible to correlate with the others in the chain.

  • All funds are managed from the same account, with no need for new private keys.

This means that each user will be able to generate a new unified address for each transaction, contact or context, avoiding any unwanted link between their operations.
