Day 0: The Departure – Charting a Course from the Pacific Northwest to Spain
Hello from the airport, where the subtle hum of activity signals the beginning of an adventure. Today, my kid and I find ourselves on the cusp of an extraordinary journey. From the Pacific Northwest, our path will lead us through Denver and Switzerland, and finally to our initial destination: Barcelona, Catalunya, Spain.
Our voyage, however, extends beyond mere geography. It's a blend of exploration and learning, a balance of curiosity and understanding, set against the backdrop of our shared interests in language, history, and music. Over the next 25 days, we'll navigate the landscapes of Spain and potentially beyond, relying on our trusty VW California Ocean campervan, and the compass of inquisitiveness guiding us.

The absence of a rigid itinerary leaves the door open to endless possibilities. It also presents its own challenges, as we recognize that the world can be a complex and troubled place. Indeed, the echoes of the Spanish Civil War can still be heard today, its lingering influence a testament to ongoing struggles for self-determination and against authoritarianism worldwide.
Our mission is to explore this rich tapestry of culture and history while respecting its nuances. The languages we hope to understand better – Spanish, Portuguese, Catalán, French, and Italian – each offer a unique insight into the regions' cultures. Our interest in music, specifically string instruments, is another thread weaving this journey together.
While our path may wind through the mesmerizing Alhambra, the vibrant streets of Málaga, and the historic layers of Granada, our true direction is steered by learning and experience. As we delve into this venture, we'll navigate our way between the dualities of the world – its beauty and its challenges, its constants and its changes.
Our expedition concludes at ZCON4, an event in Barcelona promoting privacy and human rights – subjects close to our hearts. In a world where forces of oppression and control seem to dominate, this conference represents a beacon of hope, a testament to the enduring spirit of resistance, and the pursuit of freedom.
As we embark on this journey, we acknowledge its potential for both enlightenment and unpredictability. Each day will be a step into the unknown and a humble contribution to the ongoing dialogue on privacy, human rights, and self-determination.
Join us, as we chart our course through this intricate landscape, taking one day at a time. Your company, thoughts, and insights along the way are most welcome.
