On May 17th, we gathered once again at the Zcash Club Querétaro to learn about privacy and Zcash. Check out the reports from our previous meetings: 1st anniversary and 4th meetup.

5th Meetup of the Zcash Club Querétaro.
In a recent article, I talked about the need to educate people in Mexico about privacy. In a month and a half, all phone lines in the country will have to be linked to an official ID document. If not, they will be restricted to emergency calls only. Because of this (and other reasons), I’ve decided to double down on my efforts to bring Zcash to more people.
At the 5th Meetup of Zcash Club Querétaro, we held an intensive wallet workshop. We only had time to explore Zingo in depth; we’ll cover the other wallets in future meetups. In previous meetups, we usually split our time (between 2 and 3 hours) between watching a documentary related to privacy, the history of money, or Zcash, and then using the wallets and socializing. This time, we dedicated the entire 2.5 hours of the meeting exclusively to exploring Zingo.
The 7 members who attended were able to practice sending Z-Z, Z-T, and T-Z transactions using Zingo. Although I always promote Z-Z transactions, it was necessary to teach the use of transparent (T) addresses for two main reasons:
1: Some members were interested in buying ZEC on a CEX that only allows withdrawals to transparent addresses.
2: Since Zcash and the wallets support transparent addresses, it’s wise to teach how they work, even though I always encourage people to use only shielded addresses.
After practicing these transactions, I took the TXIDs and checked them on a block explorer to show exactly what information each type of transaction reveals. This was very effective in building awareness about shielded addresses, as everyone clearly saw that transparent addresses reveal absolutely everything. The exercise also helped explain how to shield transparent funds.
Introducing Zcash to people who are completely new to cryptocurrencies is no easy task. The learning curve is real. While some concepts are difficult for certain people to grasp, I believe they generally understand Zcash’s mission. I hope the Club grows significantly in the medium term — it’s something I’m actively working on.
