Garrett Jin just dropped one of the more entertaining twists in the Zcash rally.

Garrett is famous right now for carrying an enormous visible ZEC short on Hyperliquid. Then he posted evidence suggesting he also owns roughly 202,000 ZEC spot worth hundreds of millions of dollars at recent prices.

The story goes like this:

In December 2025, about 202,077 ZEC left Binance for a transparent Zcash address.

Those coins were subsequently shielded.

Then, on January 2, 2026, 202,076.207 ZEC emerged from the shielded pool into:

t1gGCYpyURMo2FcYDSqeR8pgp2Kx9rnT72V

And there they sit.

They haven't moved.

Garrett posted screenshots and pointed to the addresses, apparently claiming this enormous position as his. Crypto Twitter quickly ran with the obvious interpretation: Garrett isn't really a giant ZEC bear, he's sitting on hundreds of millions in spot ZEC and merely hedging part of it with his short.

Maybe.

But there's a wonderfully Zcash-y problem:

None of this proves Garrett owns the coins.

The transactions are public. The addresses are public. The amounts are public. Researchers had already identified the giant 202,076 ZEC unshielding and its destination.

And this is where Zcash itself becomes the star of the story.

The shielded pool breaks the public link between coins going in and coins coming back out. We can see roughly 202,077 ZEC enter shielding and roughly 202,076 ZEC later emerge, but the blockchain does not give us a cryptographic trail saying:

these exact coins belong to this exact person.

That is not a bug.

That is the privacy working.

At the same time, the moment those coins emerge into a transparent address, the situation becomes almost comical.

Now everybody can see:

There are 202,076 ZEC here.

They arrived on January 2.

They have never moved.

They are still sitting there.

That is why a cryptocurrency that is transparent-only is such a strange design for money.

Imagine your bank account worked this way.

Someone learns one address associated with you and can potentially watch your balance, deposits, withdrawals and transaction history forever.

Zcash shows both sides of the design space in one transaction history.

Shielded: the public cannot prove where the money came from or who controlled it before.

Transparent: the entire world can stare at a 202,000-ZEC pile indefinitely.

Garrett's claim adds another layer.

Anyone sufficiently motivated could find these public transactions and say:

Yep. Those are mine.

Even an exchange screenshot isn't cryptographic proof if the address, amount, date and transaction were already publicly discoverable. Photoshop has all the ingredients.

Fortunately, crypto gives us a much better standard:

Prove possession, not screenshots.

Garrett could sign a fresh challenge with the relevant key or make a tiny predetermined transaction from t1gGCY....

Until then, we have a fascinating and highly plausible claim.

But:

“Garrett says he owns 202,000 ZEC”

and

“Garrett proved he owns 202,000 ZEC”

are two different statements.

And the whole episode accidentally demonstrates something bigger.

The shielded part of Zcash makes ownership hard to trace.

The transparent part makes wealth ridiculously easy to surveil.

Privacy should be normal. Transparency should be optional.

That's the lesson hiding inside the Garrett saga.
