Blackbeard, born Edward Teach (c. 1680 - November 22, 1718), was a notorious English pirate who operated around the West Indies and the eastern coast of Britain's North American colonies. He was probably the most famous pirate of the Golden Age of Piracy, which lasted from 1690 to 1725. Blackbeard combined physical strength and fearlessness with strategic intelligence to create an aura of invincibility in his career as a pirate. He is known to have looted hundreds of ships and became wealthy in the process. His death at the hands of the Royal Navy in 1718 marked the end of the Golden Age of Piracy.
Blackbeard, died at the Battle of Ocracoke Inlet in North Carolina in November 1718. Blackbeard and his crew of 300 pirates engaged in a fierce battle with a small force of Royal Navy sailors led by Lieutenant Robert Maynard. During the fight, Maynard and his men eventually overwhelmed Blackbeard's crew. Reacting to the chaotic fighting, Blackbeard threw down his weapons and attempted to retreat. However, Maynard and his men were able to corner the pirate, and Blackbeard ended up being fatally shot multiple times and decapitated. His severed head was hung from the bowsprit of Maynard's ship as a warning to other pirates.
