Corpán adds Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Marathi, Gujarati, Punjabi, and Urdu

The 0.8.5 Corpán release is a big one: we just added a whole new set of languages, and everything still works fully offline.

This release focuses on expanding the language universe inside Corpán - with full UI localization in every language we ship.

New languages in 0.8.5

We added:

Tamil (தமிழ்)
Telugu (తెలుగు)
Kannada (ಕನ್ನಡ)
Marathi (मराठी)
Gujarati (ગુજરાતી)
Punjabi — both scripts
- Gurmukhi (ਪੰਜਾਬੀ)
- Shahmukhi (پنجابی)
Urdu (اردو)

That means Corpán now ships with:

27 languages
plus 2 scripts for Mandarin (Simplified + Traditional)
plus 2 scripts for Punjabi (Gurmukhi + Shahmukhi)

Total: 29 “language options” you can learn with.

And yes: it still works offline.

Fully localized, in every language

This is one of the coolest parts: every screen in Corpán is localized into every supported language.

If you know Gujarati and Hindi, you can use Corpán comfortably — and learn any of the other 25+ languages from the languages you already understand.

You can also practice multiple languages at the same time:

rotate stacks,
compare similar words across languages,
reinforce concepts by learning through different base languages.

This is what a real language platform should feel like: flexible, multilingual, and personal.

Special superpowers: Scripts

Mandarin: Simplified vs Traditional

You can learn and compare:

Simplified Chinese zh-Hans
Traditional Chinese zh-Hant

Side-by-side study is incredibly useful, especially if you already know one script and want to gain reading comfort in the other.

Punjabi: Both scripts included

Punjabi ships in both scripts, fully supported in-app:

Gurmukhi (India) — pa-Guru
Shahmukhi (Pakistan) — pa-Arab

So you can:

learn Punjabi from scratch in either script, or
learn the other script if you already know one.

That’s rare and powerful.

Works offline. Ships with the app.

Corpán is built to be offline-first. These languages ship with the app and work without an internet connection.

That matters:

PRIVACY
SPEED
on airplanes,
on commutes,
in areas with limited coverage or bandwidth.
for kids

Offline language learning should not feel “limited”. Corpán keeps pushing that boundary.

Oh, and let's not forget that there are NO ADS sucking down your time, attention, and bandwidth.

Known TTS limitations (and what you can do)

We use native OS Text-to-Speech wherever possible (it’s fast, high quality, and integrates beautifully). But there are gaps we can’t fix ourselves yet — the platform vendors need to step up.

Apple TTS missing support:

Urdu
Punjabi (both scripts)
Gujarati

Google TTS missing support:

Persian (Farsi)
Punjabi Shahmukhi

If you care about these languages, please send feedback. The more people ask, the higher it goes in priority.

If Apple and Google don’t add support, we will eventually ship our own TTS system — but we’d rather use native voices when possible.

How to request missing voices from Apple

Open Feedback Assistant on iPhone/iPad/Mac
- On iPhone/iPad: it may appear after installing a public beta profile, but you can also use Apple’s feedback channels from their developer/support pages.
Submit feedback requesting Text-to-Speech voices for:
- Urdu (ur)
- Punjabi Gurmukhi (pa-Guru)
- Punjabi Shahmukhi (pa-Arab)
- Gujarati (gu)
Mention that these languages are critical for accessibility and language learning, and that they should be available via the standard system TTS APIs.

How to request missing voices from Google

Google’s voice/TTS support varies by device and engine, but you can still make noise:

Open Settings → Accessibility → Text-to-speech output
Check which TTS engine you’re using (often “Speech Services by Google”)
Use the Send feedback option (if present), or send feedback from the Google app / Play Store listing for Speech Services by Google.
Request Persian (Farsi) TTS support (fa) for the system TTS engine.

This is especially important for offline-first apps like Corpán that rely on OS-level TTS.

Corpán 0.8.5 supports 29 language options (languages + script variants). You can pick any base language you’re comfortable with and learn from there.
