An improper fraction is when the numerator is larger than the denominator. It is also known as a top-heavy fraction. For example, if the numerator is 5 and the denominator is 4, the fraction would be written as 5/4. This would be an improper fraction because 5 is larger than 4. Improper fractions can be simplified by dividing the numerator and the denominator by the same number.

A mixed number is any fraction that includes a whole number as well as a fraction. Mixed numbers are written in two parts separated by a space. This is a mixed number because it combines three whole numbers with a fraction.
