One of the reasons I love to read is that reading can actually make you understand a lot of things about the world, people, and stuff you didn't know. I was browsing my X account and reading some cool content when I came across this post from Pete Rizzo. His post actually amazed me as it touched on things that are very interesting to the market and need people who can correctly tell them.
So, in the post, Rizzo was explaining why Julian Assange, the journalist who was imprisoned for exposing US government atrocities in the Middle East, is a Bitcoin legend. He explained that Assange, from an early age, was a hacker and cyberpunk who turned into a journalist to expose governments worldwide. For his work in independent journalism, WikiLeaks, his company, was blacklisted by all major traditional payment systems such as PayPal, Visa, and so on.
He found himself in a war with these companies, and all his assets were frozen due to his journalism activities, which gave him the space to follow Bitcoin more closely. In 2010, he announced on the Bitcoin Forum that he was planning to use Bitcoin as a method of payment, which didn't please Satoshi Nakamoto, who saw Julian Assange's move as dangerous to the industry. Nakamoto believed that Assange was bringing too much "noise" to Bitcoin and that the technology needed more time to grow organically.
Despite all that, and because he needed to use a payment system that the government couldn't track, he started receiving donations in Bitcoin in 2011. Since then, WikiLeaks has received more than 4,100 BTC and helped Julian Assange fight against many things, from legal fees to living using just Bitcoin.
For his activities, Julian Assange was many times pursued, ending up with his imprisonment in London, which took almost five years to gain his freedom that the world is seeing today. Assange was jailed not because he's a common criminal but because he touched sensitive data and exposed it, compromising the US government's reputation. The truth is that they did all of what Julian exposed. If not, why are they worried about him and why do they now accept dealing with him and grant his freedom? It's all about politics and national security measures.
