Do you have any idea how colossal the decentralized finance ecosystem is? Read on to understand.
One of the daily habits I cherish is reading because it keeps me updated and enhances my understanding of the decentralized cryptocurrency ecosystem, the global world, or general knowledge.
In one of these readings dated December 9th, a piece of news grabbed my attention. It boldly proclaimed that the decentralized cryptocurrency ecosystem had a total value locked in protocols of over $53 billion. This value surpasses the Gross Domestic Products of many countries worldwide, such as Uganda, Tunisia, or even Jordan.
It's a staggering amount locked in protocols, and it's not surprising as many countries increasingly invest in creating products like blockchain-based identification and use the Ethereum network to immortalize products. After all, anything recorded on the blockchain cannot be altered. Many protocols are so substantial that their locked value is awe-inspiring—over $52 billion locked in a decentralized manner.
It's interesting to note that Ethereum is a key player among the chains with the highest total values locked. I find it intriguing that people still invest in Ethereum despite exorbitant transaction fees that don't favor the majority of small investors unless they belong to a wealthy class willing to take significant risks.
What's encouraging is that other players, focused on financial inclusion, are also listed, such as Solana. It offers affordable transaction fees with impressive Total Value Locked (TVL), indicating that people are increasingly leaning towards decentralized finance (DeFi) over traditional finance. Users can stake their assets and profit significantly, but there are risks like impermanent loss, hackers, rug pulls, and others that can lead to financial losses.

To put it in perspective, imagine a GDP representing the total value of everything produced within a country in a year—goods, services, etc. Now, consider that these values don't come close to $52 billion! That's the magnitude locked in decentralized finances globally. It raises the question: Are we witnessing a revolution where individuals and institutions are losing faith in the traditional economic sector?
It's a question worth considering.
