In today's globalized world, cryptocurrencies are capturing attention in various regions, including Africa. But how is this new form of decentralized money impacting the continent and its economy, which often isn't based on traditional financial instruments?
There's a noticeable ambition that Africa is paving a path of growth in the cryptocurrency field, and some believe that the continent might soon position itself as a key player in this ecosystem. However, it's important to recognize that Africa is vast and largely composed of rural populations facing significant challenges, such as limited access to energy and clean water, as well as precarious conditions that restrict their ability to use electronic devices with internet access and means for online transactions.
Certainly, major cities and African provincial capitals house people with easier access to the internet and, consequently, to cryptocurrencies. Nevertheless, it's crucial to understand that there are many nations on the continent, and in some countries, the concept of cryptocurrencies isn't even known. Even local payment methods, such as the mobile wallet service M-pesa, which provides access to a centralized digital wallet, might be inaccessible for many. The reality is that many inhabitants live in remote areas, facing considerable difficulties.
Therefore, before Africa becomes a cryptocurrency hub, it's essential to recognize that exploring this potential should start in remote areas, only then disseminating knowledge to cities. In cities, where conditions for internet access are more favorable, there's an environment conducive to sparking curiosity about cryptocurrencies. Without an approach like this, the adoption of cryptocurrencies in the African continent will face significant challenges.
Even in cities with minimal internet access, there are people who are unaware or uninterested in cryptocurrencies, and with reason. After all, many don't comprehend the concept and struggle to assimilate the information. Additionally, there's skepticism regarding this new ecosystem, seen as a potential way to deceive people and take their money.
Let's take Mozambique as an example. In my country, I have a group that has been exclusively working with cryptocurrencies for over four years. This group is the main point for buying and selling decentralized currencies, where trust-based rules have been established. Each member of this group plays a crucial role in recruiting new members and, step by step, shares knowledge about the decentralized ecosystem.
Despite the absence of local cryptocurrency exchanges or content platforms, the desire to expand the free cryptocurrency market in Mozambique persists. The journey is challenging, but individuals like me are facing the difficulties. As a user of Bitcoin Cash and ZEC for over four years, I use this cryptocurrencies for everyday payments.
However, this battle is not simple. It's necessary to find people willing to accept cryptocurrencies in exchange for goods and services. For instance, I'm building my house and I seek construction yards that accept Bitcoin Cash, ZEC, or Polygon as payment for construction materials. In times of difficulty, I turn to my group of friends who are also interested in investing in cryptocurrencies.
In summary, the life of a cryptocurrency enthusiast in Africa is filled with challenges and determination. While the continent strives to understand and adopt cryptocurrencies, individuals and groups are paving a path of growth, even in the face of cultural and logistical obstacles. As the global crypto ecosystem evolves, Africa's journey in this scenario becomes increasingly intriguing and inspiring.
