Naomi Brockwell urged followers to unlink their desktop to their signal app mostly due to a flaw that was discovered by the user mysk_co on X. This user did a small security experiment which concluded that users are in imminent danger if a potential sophisticated hacker can exploit chats and get access of their private dialogue.
In the experiment this was the findings:
A simple Python script was used to copy Signal's local storage directory to another location, simulating a malicious script or app.
The script was run on a Mac, creating a backup of the Signal data.
This data was transferred to a fresh macOS installation in a virtual machine.
Signal was installed on the VM and the copied data was placed in the expected directory.
Upon launching Signal, it restored the session with all chat histories intact.
Messages were exchanged with a contact from the VM, and Signal on the Mac was also started.
This resulted in three live sessions running in unison on Mac, iPhone, and VM, without any warning from Signal about the third, cloned session.
The key risks and dangers highlighted by this experiment are:
Unauthorized Access: A malicious script can clone the Signal data, allowing attackers to seize a session without the user's knowledge. This poses a severe threat to privacy and security as attackers can read and send messages from the cloned session.
No Alerts: Signal does not notify the user of an additional session, making it difficult for users to detect any unauthorized access.
Session Integrity: All sessions, including the cloned one, remain valid and operational, compromising the integrity of the user's communication.
So, this small unnoticed by many flaw can lead to a potential sophisticated exploiter getting access of users private chats. I believe this flaw was long happening but this research by this user will help to uncover what are the main potential ricks who come from this and ensure users don't get caught with their pants down when link their desktop with the signal messaging app.
