It's been a chaotic and worrying situation, the one I've been living in since three months ago. When things went south in my nation, a series of riots erupted, turning dreams and hopes into a dark narrative. My country is no longer the same, and it has become normal to find people stealing, destroying, and doing whatever pleases them without the police taking any action.
It's complete anarchy, and I don't see things changing anytime soon. More protests are being planned for Monday, January 13, 2024, and this situation is becoming uncontrollable. It’s okay that the candidate who lost doesn’t agree with the results. It’s okay to contest the results. But putting citizens' lives in danger again and again is too much.
There’s no control over those who follow the “new self-proclaimed president of the people.” Instead of turning this into a good revolution, it’s making things worse and very dangerous for all of us who live here. The police shoot indiscriminately, and at the slightest sign of danger, they retaliate with real bullets, not rubber ones. Africa is known for tight regimes that control the police and military, and when they feel threatened, they become more dangerous than criminals, opening fire on their own countrymen.
I don’t know what will happen in the coming days or if things will change quickly, but I am very worried about the path we are heading down. For now, I can only take care of my family with the means I have and hope that things will change soon. I opened this fundraiser campaign last year to help me navigate these uncertain times, and I hope more of you will contribute, as it helps more than you can imagine.
This is not just a fundraiser campaign—it’s freedom for me, my people, and those who surround me. You might see me on social media or publishing pieces without mentioning much of what is going on because I prefer to live with hope that things will change. I want my kids and the children of my fellow countrymen to have a future, as in any conflict, it’s always the kids, women, and elders who suffer the most.
I don’t want to leave my nation and seek exile, but if things don’t settle down, I may have to flee and look for a place to stay until the chaos subsides.
