On August 28, 2014, the world lost a key figure in the story of Bitcoin—Hal Finney. While not everyone knows his name, Hal played a huge role in making Bitcoin what it is today, the most popular and valuable digital currency in the world.
Hal Finney was a computer scientist and cryptography expert who worked closely with the mysterious creator of Bitcoin, known only as Satoshi Nakamoto. In fact, Hal was the very first person to receive Bitcoin from Satoshi in a test transaction. This simple act was a major step toward recognizing Bitcoin as a new way for people to send money directly to one another, without needing a bank or middleman.
Over the years, some people have speculated that Hal himself might have been Satoshi Nakamoto, but history suggests they were two separate people. However, there’s no doubt that Hal’s early work and belief in Bitcoin helped it grow into the massive financial system we know today.
Sadly, Hal passed away ten years ago due to a serious illness, but his contributions to Bitcoin live on. Even today, his X account (formerly Twitter) remains online, managed by his wife, reminding us of his lasting impact. Back when Bitcoin was just an idea, with no real value or purpose, Hal was there, helping to bring it to life.
We should remember Hal Finney as a true pioneer in the world of Bitcoin. He was the first to believe in Satoshi’s vision, the first to use Bitcoin, and one of the first to see its potential to change how we handle money. Without Hal, Bitcoin might not be what it is today.
