Ross Ulbricht, the founder of the largest dark web marketplace, Silk Road, is marking his 10th year in prison today. He was convicted for creating a platform that facilitated the sale of nearly anything online, both legal and illegal, using BTC as the means of payment.
For the crimes he was charged with, Ross Ulbricht is serving two life sentences plus an additional 40 years. He was found guilty of creating and maintaining a dark web market that, according to the FBI, generated over $80 million profit in current value and had more than $1.2 billion in transactions between 2011 and 2013 when he was arrested.
While many argue that the sentence he received is excessive, others believe that Ross Ulbricht deserved it, as Silk Road was a black market where various illicit activities took place, including the sale of illegal firearms, drugs, human trafficking, gambling, and more, all paid for in BTC to facilitate transactions, ensuring privacy and anonymity.
Today, Ross Ulbricht is gaining sympathy, and some organizations are advocating for his pardon. However, the U.S. government remains steadfast in its belief that the sentence was well-deserved and sends a clear message to anyone contemplating a venture like Ross Ulbricht's: 'We are watching for illegal activities and will send those who commit such crimes to prison.'
In a way, the U.S. government has a point, as Silk Road was an entirely unregulated marketplace that allowed for illegal sales, punishable by law. However, for a first offense, many believe that the government should have imposed a more exemplary sentence to convey that what he was operating was illegal, rather than two consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole, which is considered overly punitive."
There are individuals who have committed heinous crimes and received much lighter sentences or remain free, such as Sam Bankman-Fried, who embezzled funds from clients and has yet to be convicted. He has stolen far more than what Silk Road generated in its two-year operation.
In the end, it is the judicial system that decides, and they have their reasons for the sentencing. However, from a layman's perspective, it appears that they may have gone overboard without knowing the specific parameters the court considered for his incarceration without the possibility of parole.
What Ross Ulbricht can do now is hope for a presidential pardon miracle that would allow him to leave the confines of his prison cell and breathe the air as a free man once again.
