Since the wave of attacks initiated by Hamas against Israel, many have died, and today was another dark day as over 2,000 people lost their lives due to a new retaliatory attack by Israel.
According to the Brazilian website G1 Globo, citing local sources, at least the aforementioned number is known. However, with the Israeli forces' incursion into the Gaza Strip, many more may die, either due to gunfire or due to a lack of resources such as food and electricity. This is because, in addition to planning a military incursion into the Strip, Israel has drastically reduced these resources as a strategic move to tire or force the 'terrorist' group Hamas to surrender.
This latest Israeli military incursion that killed over 2,000 people in the Gaza Strip is considered the deadliest ever. It's not surprising, considering thousands of people have been killed in just a few days since Hamas initiated attacks in Israel, killing thousands and taking some Israelis captive as bargaining chips with the Israeli government.
The Israel-Palestine conflict is not new, and it certainly won't be the last, as it revolves around something that will always be a source of contention: land.
Exactly, land! Land has always been a headache between Israel and Palestine, and since the State of Israel was established in May 1948, numerous catastrophes have been recorded between the two nations. After all, Palestine has no defined borders and lives under a state of settlements, an agreement made when Israel was created, where they would lease the land to Israel, which was bought by the worldwide Zionist organization.
A bit of historical context
It's easy to blame one side or the other in this military conflict between Palestinians and Israelis, but with the Hamas attack that caused thousands of deaths and Israel's retaliation, many civilians have died, and nothing justifies these deaths.
The conflicts between the two peoples began to take alarming proportions when Israel, assisted by the UN and a handful of countries, created the State of Israel, dividing Palestine because, according to ancient history, the Jews had always originated from there. But it's essential to consider that Palestinians had been living there for thousands of centuries, as the Jews had left the territory, spreading throughout the world.
However, with the near extermination of Jews by the Nazis, where more than 6 million people died, there was an urgent need for a place where Jews from all over the world could call home. Global agreements began to take shape, and on May 14, 1948, the State of Israel was born.
Israel was born through the division of Palestine, with the majority percentage going to Israel, around 53%, and the rest to Palestine. The worldwide Zionist group's task was to buy land from Palestinians and lease it to Israel, with much of the acquired land pushing Palestinians further inland, making Israel bigger and more powerful.
Israeli power pushes Palestinians to the extreme and often causes clashes, resulting in conflicts like the ones that today are causing thousands of deaths, which cannot be justified. Israel has radical groups as well as Palestine, and it's these groups that create catastrophes, taking thousands of lives with them.
The world's opinion always differs on human rights in this region. Some justify that Israel has the right to defend its sovereignty, while others argue that Palestinians in the Gaza Strip have the right to react. After all, they live under colonization and apartheid and want independence from Israel.
This struggle is ancient and is unlikely to have a healthy resolution between the parties because it has deep roots in religion, border demarcation, natural resources, culture, and more. What can be asked is that the international community must intervene at some point because what happens in the Gaza Strip was considered by the UN a place where living conditions are dire, despite having around 2.2 million inhabitants.
