Hackers get access to web3 connector kit from ledger and steal astonishing $600k from users

Fri, Dec 15

The evolution of the crypto space comes with the development of new tactics and asset theft techniques by malicious actors. While developers create new methods for Dapp interaction in the crypto ecosystem, hackers refine ways to compromise and gain access to assets that don't belong to them.

Yesterday, Thursday December 14th, malicious actors took control of the Ledger connector kit, gaining access to over $600,000 in external assets. This is the officially disclosed amount, and there could be much more within the crypto space.

By accessing the Ledger Connector Kit, cybercriminals obtained a method for connecting Dapps, widely used in the crypto ecosystem. The Ledger connector kit is the most popular method worldwide for interacting with web3 Dapps, providing access to the cryptocurrency paradise.

For instance, a user wanting to connect their cryptocurrency wallet to Uniswap and buy or sell assets must sign the connection, allowing hackers full access to the assets in the wallet, leading to its depletion.

CypherPunk Zero NFTs were also affected

This breach in Ledger's connector kit undoubtedly resulted in irreparable losses of cryptocurrencies and NFTs in the ecosystem. Many individuals are currently facing hardships due to cybercriminal actions.

One of the victims of the hackers' malicious actions was the CypherPunk Zero Zcash project, an NFT project launched on the Ethereum network in collaboration with the ECC and a digital artist. Users and the ECC treasury had over 200 NFTs stolen and redirected to addresses not owned by the legitimate owners, causing significant harm to the Zcash ecosystem.

The breach had alarming repercussions in the crypto ecosystem as the Ledger connector kit is the primary tool for connecting Dapps, ensuring smooth, secure, and non-intrusive navigation. However, when exploited by a skilled hacker, the cryptographic signature can lead to a significant drain of cryptocurrencies.

Furthermore, the breach disabled revoke.cash, a tool allowing users to disconnect permissions from previous Smart contracts that interacted with the address. This could grant access to users' cryptocurrencies without their knowledge, emphasizing the importance of revoking access when interacting with Smart contracts.

Final thoughts and a new perspective on the web3 space

Thursday's breach of the Ledger connector kit serves as a reminder that much work is still needed to ensure security in the crypto space. It raises questions about the proclaimed decentralization, as users interact with decentralized Dapps while relying on tools maintained by specific groups susceptible to exploitation.

Despite interacting with decentralized Dapps, users continue to use tools that can be exploited, endangering the entire crypto economy. This breach underscores that those who choose self-custody, private addresses, and non-frozen web3 apps remain a safer means to secure assets.

Always be cautious about the Dapps you connect to and, if possible, use them sparingly or consider using web2 and self-custody for cryptocurrencies. Remember, danger is always lurking.
