When you analyze what’s happening in the world, you can see that there is indeed an attempt to silence people and put an end to free speech once and for all. The arrest of Durov, the imminent ban of X in Brazil, arbitrary arrests in the United Kingdom, and many more events lead us to think that governments don’t care about free speech, and it’s under attack.
Many things can be said, and the issue can be painted in a way that doesn’t make it seem like free speech is under threat, but the reality is harsh in this regard.
Governments are afraid that platforms like X, Telegram, and others hold too much power and that people might use these platforms to attack and denounce the government. In Venezuela, the seemingly elected president blocked X, the private messaging app Signal, Reddit, and even shut down access to funds for Venezuelans by prohibiting them from connecting to Binance, the world’s largest crypto exchange.
Just in the first three paragraphs, you can get an idea of the platforms that are being silenced, and that’s just the beginning. Governments are still warming up, and without realizing it, they’ll soon be attacking more platforms. Today, Pavel Durov was released from prison, where over $5 million was demanded, and he was prohibited from leaving the country. Interestingly, the CEO of Telegram is being accused of crimes in which he is considered an accomplice, but none where he actually participated willingly.
This way of prosecuting people paves the way for the CEO of Meta Labs, Elon Musk, the CEO of Reddit, and many others to one day also be taken to court for crimes they are considered accomplices to. Hmm, this is just the beginning, and we will see more big names answering for crimes they never committed in their lives. This is the game; it’s intense, and governments are attacking on all fronts.
