Today we remember the tragedy of the World Trade Center, where thousands of innocent people died. September 11, 2001, wasn't just a day that changed the world, but one that marked it. Until that day, the free world hadn't experienced an attack on its soil of that magnitude. Every American and foreigner felt that attack in different ways.
I was at school when that happened. Too innocent at the time to understand what was going on, but I knew that something bad had happened. I couldn't grasp the real picture or the magnitude of the attacks, as for me it was just something happening on TV, but for the ones in the field, it was terror. Imagine me at school, being taken out of the classroom to watch the first "biggest domestic" attack on the most powerful nation in the world.
Even being too young and innocent to understand the full picture, I felt that terror in my bones, and today, 25 years later, when I remember it, I still have the same feeling. I grew up watching action movies made in Hollywood where the American is always the hero and overcomes everything, but on nine eleven, that didn't happen. They were hit, wounded and terrorized in their own land. That day marked a generation and made people want to defend their nation against those attackers.
The world changed, and since then, it hasn't been the same. More security was implemented, privacy was halted in certain scenarios, more scrutiny was imposed, and divisionism among people started to become more noticeable. The United States "united" to defend their country and make those who dared to threaten their way of life pay, not just momentarily but always. It's not something that will pass, as the fight against terrorism is continuous and doesn't stop.
In actuality, there is still a lot to be told about nine eleven, with conspiracy theories coming to light. Some argue that the attacks were an internal plan by the CIA and Mossad, but that remains just a conspiracy, as nothing has been proven to this day. People want to find culprits for the incident, and even though Bin Laden was taken down, it still isn't enough. You can kill the leader, but not an idea.
Terrorism should be fought no matter what. People will keep finding people to blame, but they can't deny that the events of September 11, 2001, were real and that people died that day. Innocent people who were just doing their chores, working and doing their normal stuff, far from comprehending that they were a target of people with malicious intentions. May the day help us understand that we aren't safe even in the most protected, strong and developed nation in the world. Bad things can still happen.
September 11, 2001, should be a reflection on why terrorism is something to be fought every day to eradicate. May the souls of the people who died that day rest in peace, and for the survivors, a "reminder" that they are heroes of nine eleven.
There are no reasons to kill innocent people.
