The Network Sustainability Fund (NSM) is a way to support long-term network security and development by removing some ZEC from circulation and releasing it later via future block rewards, while keeping the 21M cap.
This matters because as block rewards decline, Zcash needs a stable, protocol-level funding mechanism to stay secure and resilient.

On Jan 20, 2026, Shielded Labs announced that it has received a generous donation of 3,221 ZEC (approximately $1.2 million) from Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss.
This contribution will support key initiatives, including the Network Sustainability Mechanism (NSM), Crosslink, and Dynamic Fees, strengthening the long-term security and scalability of the Zcash network.
Tyler & Cameron have been long-time supporters of Zcash and its mission to advance private, self-sovereign money. Through Gemini, they have demonstrated strong leadership in privacy-focused innovation.
This marks their second donation to Shielded Labs, following their initial support in 2023. As an independent, Swiss-based organization, Shielded Labs remains committed to advancing long-term protocol development.
The Zcash Foundation has released Zebra 4.0.0, bringing major improvements to observability, operations, and developer experience.
This release introduces enhanced monitoring and tracing through new Grafana and AlertManager integrations, improved Docker Compose workflows, and built-in OpenTelemetry support. These features make it easier for operators and developers to diagnose performance issues, track request flows, and optimize RPC performance in real time.
Zebra 4.0.0 also improves configuration and compatibility by fully supporting TOML files regardless of extension and aligning RPC behavior more closely with zcashd. Infrastructure upgrades include optimized Docker builds, updated checkpoints for faster syncing, and refreshed dependencies.
While largely backward compatible, the release includes stricter TOML parsing and updated RPC data types.
With these updates, Zebra becomes more reliable, observable, and contributor-friendly, strengthening its role as the Zcash Foundation’s high-performance, Rust-based node implementation.
The ZCG meeting on January 19, 2026, brought together committee members to review ongoing proposals, discuss funding priorities, and evaluate progress across active projects. The session highlighted continued efforts to support ecosystem growth, transparency, and community-driven development.

In 2025, the Zcash Foundation advanced financial privacy through strong leadership, community governance, and technical innovation.
Following a leadership transition, Alex Bornstein was appointed Executive Director, alongside new internal promotions that strengthened organizational capacity. ZF deepened community participation through the adoption of the Community & Coinholder Funding Model and a successful move to Secure Internet Voting, resulting in record engagement.
The Foundation expanded global and community impact through major events, a new three-year events strategy, and the launch of the Shielded Aid Initiative, bringing privacy-preserving technology to humanitarian aid.
On the technical side, ZF delivered major Zebra and FROST releases, completed independent security audits, and reinforced critical open-source infrastructure.
Throughout the year, ZF maintained strong transparency, earned a 4-star Charity Navigator rating, and continued regular public reporting.
As 2026 begins, the team remains focused on strengthening the ecosystem and advancing privacy as a public good.
