Zcash's Ironwood mainnet activation height has been set and tagged!
All of the major organizations are committed to activation of NU6.3 at height 3428143, which is approximately July 28th at 8AM EST.

• Zebra 6.0.0 is the first stable release supporting the NU6.3 “Ironwood” Mainnet upgrade, adding the new shielded pool, v6 transaction format, security hardening, and stability improvements ahead of activation.

• LiveZEC announced an upcoming platform that enables private ZEC donations with real-time OBS alerts, allowing viewers to tip without creating an account, exposing wallet history, or relying on a payment intermediary.

• Sean Bowe explained how Ironwood’s formal verification is designed to eliminate undetectable counterfeiting vulnerabilities by mathematically verifying the protocol’s specification before the new shielded pool goes live.

Zebra 6.0.0 Brings Ironwood to Mainnet
The Zcash Foundation released Zebra 6.0.0, the first stable version supporting the NU6.3 “Ironwood” network upgrade on Mainnet. Node operators are encouraged to upgrade before activation, scheduled for July 28.
This release introduces support for the new Ironwood shielded pool and v6 transaction format, while updating RPCs to expose Ironwood data and migrating Zebra to the latest NU6.3 libraries.
Alongside Ironwood support, Zebra 6.0.0 includes a security fix that prevents certain high-cost mempool transactions from consuming excessive verification resources, improving node resilience without affecting consensus or user funds.
The release also fixes several networking and synchronization issues, updates the state database for Ironwood compatibility without requiring a resync, and raises build requirements for developers compiling Zebra from source.

LiveZEC Brings Private Donations to Live Streaming
Recently, Michael from Zcash Brazil announced LiveZEC, an upcoming platform that enables private ZEC donations with real-time OBS alerts for livestreams.
The goal is to make tipping simple and privacy-preserving. Viewers will be able to send ZEC in seconds without creating an account, exposing their wallet history, or relying on a payment intermediary.
LiveZEC is expected to launch soon, bringing another real-world use case for Zcash as private, permissionless digital money.

zcashd Reaches End of Life on July 18
The Zcash ecosystem is completing its transition away from zcashd, which will reach its scheduled end-of-life service halt on July 18 and will not support the upcoming NU6.3 (Ironwood) network upgrade.
Node operators are encouraged to complete their migration to Zebra and the ZODL-maintained Zallet wallet before July 18. From that point onward, Zebra will be the only supported node implementation participating in the Zcash peer-to-peer network.
The transition marks the completion of Zcash’s move to a new generation of Rust-based infrastructure.

Ironwood Formal Verification Targets Undetectable Counterfeiting Risks
Last week, Sean Bowe published a new post explaining how the formal verification effort behind Ironwood is designed to eliminate undetectable counterfeiting vulnerabilities in Zcash’s next shielded pool.
The work follows the recent discovery of a counterfeiting flaw in Orchard. Although the vulnerability was patched and there is no evidence that it was exploited, any past exploitation would be impossible to detect directly. Ironwood therefore starts with a fresh shielded pool, while a turnstile mechanism allows users to migrate funds from Orchard and help demonstrate that no counterfeit ZEC entered circulation.
The key distinction is between bugs in the protocol specification and bugs in its software implementation. According to the post, specification flaws can create undetectable counterfeiting risks, while implementation flaws would leave evidence on-chain that could later be identified by replaying transaction history with corrected software.
Shielded Labs is formally analyzing Ironwood’s mathematical specification to prove that its verifier preserves balance integrity under the protocol’s stated cryptographic assumptions. The effort is being carried out with support from Tal Derei, Gregor Mitscha-Baude of zkSecurity, and Daira-Emma Hopwood of ZODL.
The immediate goal is to establish strong guarantees against the highest-risk class of monetary bugs before Ironwood becomes the active shielded pool. Future work may extend formal verification further into the implementation itself.
