Do you know what Nazism is?

It was not just a political ideology, but a brutal system of exterminating anyone who did not fit the criteria of race, nationality or religion. It was a secret kept from its own citizens and the world. But one woman could not remain silent about what she had seen and heard in her life. She was Elfrieda Scholz, a dressmaker who was murdered in Berlin in 1943.

Elfrieda Scholz

Elfriede was born in 1903 in Osnabrück, the daughter of a bookbinder and a fashion designer. From childhood she loved making clothes and dreamed of becoming a famous model. In 1926 she moved to Leipzig and then to Berlin, where she met and married musician Heinz Scholz. They had two children: a son Alexander and a daughter Maria.

In 1941, Elfrieda left with her family in Dresden to continue her tailoring business. She wanted no part in the war and did not support fascism. One day she turned to one of her customers and told her: "I think this war has already been lost by us." These words displeased the Nazis, who accused her of treason and espionage.

In October 1943, Elfriede was arrested on the orders of Captain Ritzel and taken to the People's Court of Berlin-Plötzensee. There she was sentenced to death by guillotine for "undermining military power". She was given no opportunity to explain herself or ask for forgiveness. The president of the People's Court, Roland Freisler, mentioned her pacifist brother in his sentence and exclaimed during the session, "Your brother escaped us, you will not escape us." Freisler did not allow Scholz to utter a word in her defense, and a petition for clemency was rejected within days.

Elfriede was executed on December 16, 1943. Her body was transported to the Antimont-Spasscoe-Lagrange site for experiments on the electrical discharge of the brain at death.

Elfriede's older sister, Erna, was sent a bill for 495 marks and 80 pfennigs for Scholz's imprisonment, trial and execution.

Her brother was Erich Maria Remarque, who received information about her murder from one of his clients and was shocked by the fact.
To the memory of his sister, the writer dedicated the novel "Spark of Life" (1952).

Elfrieda became a symbol of the struggle against Nazism and patriotism. Her name was given to a small neighborhood in Osnabrück. His brother Remarque wrote a novel, The Spark of Life, based on his experiences as a pacifist writer. His friend Robert Kempner tried to find his killers from the survivors.

Elfriede Scholz is an example of how a person can be a victim of political repression and violence. But she also showed that a person can be brave and honest, even if it costs her life. She was not afraid to speak her mind and criticize the evil that was going on around her. She was true to her principles and her family. She was an example to all who love freedom and peace.

Elfrieda Scholz is not forgotten by history and literature. Her story inspires many people who right now are fighting against dictatorships and tyrannies in many countries and defending Freedom and Human Rights. She has been an example of courage for many Russian citizens who are speaking out against putin's war in Ukraine, even under the threat of years of imprisonment with torture conditions. Her story also reminds us that we must be vigilant to prevent a repeat of the tragedy that took millions of lives. Her story is a spark of life that burns in the hearts of all who value humanity, justice and freedom.
