Cypherpunk Underground Ch 4 - Gray Man: The Art of Being Unremarkable

Welcome back for the 4th Edition Part 2 of Cypherpunk Underground, an educational primer for the dystopian surveilance state of our future. If you haven't read Part 1 of this chapter it can be found here. In Part 1 we go through case studies of to how to/not how to blend into your urban landscape. In Part 2 we will discuss the things that are often hidden in plain sight but go unnoticed.

Becoming Unremarkable

Certainly you have heard of the Disney Coorporation, they practically own every media outlet and their current valuation is approximtely $200 Billion. With that kind of budget they afford some pretty cool technology and pay the brightest minds when it comes to design of their parks. What if I told you that one of the most clever things Disney does at their parks is inexpensive and so unremarkable that you probably have never noticed it? Disney World and Disney Land cover 27,000 acres and 500 acres respectively! Disney tries hard to keep to the themes of the area of the park which you may find yourself in, (Adventureland, Tomorrowland, Frontierland, etc) but how do they distract you from all of the unsightly things they don't want you to see like utility boxes, service exits, off-limits areas, warehouses and the like? The answer is to be unremarkable.

Go Away Green and Blending Blue

Go Away Green is a specific shade of olive drab that Disney uses to make unsightly structures and details blend in with the landscaping. If you have been to the parks it is not something you likely noticed but once its brought to your attention you begin to realize it is EVERYWHERE.

Fire hydrants and railings are painted in Go Away Green. Even though it is a different shade than the grass surrounding it you still find yourself ignoring it. The color is so plain that your brain basically tunes it out.

Now that you are looking for the green you think to yourself "Oh its the speaker boxes". Look again though. Did you notice the area above the decorative light posts? The lighter shade of green blends in to the lighter color of the sky. This pulls your eyes away from the electrical wiring overhead.

Buildings on the peripherals use Go Away Green. By making the areas outside of the well themed areas boring your attention stays to the path and to the landscaping.

Now you are starting to notice it right?

Moving on to blending blue. You barely notice the building in the top right or the building underneath the word Hollywood.

The "Secret" entrace to Club 33 in New Orleans Square at Disneyland. This club is extremely exclusive and there are a multitude of conspiracy theories about it.

Hidden Cell Towers and military weapons systems

There is a whole industry surrounding the concept of being hidden in plain sight. Lets look at some examples of hidden cell towers and emerging military technologies. It appears that they have came up with a solution for EVERY environment.

Tens of thousands of these type of cargo containers are moving throughout the world at this moment. I wonder how many of these weapons containers are on the move?

Logos and Printed Media

Conclusion

By now you are starting to get the concept but may be wondering the point we are trying to make. In the case of Go Away Green and the cell towers we can see how we can be conditioned to ignore things that are right in front of us. The "Gray Man" methodology relies on this human tendency to filter out our surroundings. Sometimes the best way to hide isn't that fancy disguise or camo its by being the most boring and unassuming person in your environment. In Part 3 we will be further exploring practical ways that Cypherpunks can fade into obscurity.
