Cypherpunk Underground Ch 2 - Tactics for the Defeat of Quadrupedal Unmanned Ground Vehicles

Situation-

Uprisings and unrest have led to martial law and a nationwide curfew. Curfew is in effect during hours of darkness and is enforced by checkpoints and observation posts manned by military authorities. The checkpoints are spread densely throughout the city, but thanks to encrypted memos shared throughout the Cypherpunk Underground you and other Cypherpunks have mapped out the checkpoint locations and areas under observation. These maps have allowed Underground members to clandestinely exchange information and materials during nighttime rendezvous throughout the city. New chatter among the underground indicates that military authorities have begun to deploy Quadrupedal Unmanned Ground Vehicles (QUG-Vs) to conduct security patrols in areas beyond government checkpoints. The implied purpose of the robotic dogs is to aid in the detection of curfew breakers and assist in the neutralization or capture of CPU members.

Task- Disable and Defeat the QUG-Vs to ensure the continued night time mobility of the underground.

Due to some helpful OSINT, members of CPU have been able to determine that authorities in your city are using the Vision 60 QUG-V from Ghost Robotics. In addition to the spec sheet below it is assessed that the robot can travel at a sustained speed of 4 mph and has powerful night vision and thermal imaging equipment. It is assumed that there are only two front facing cameras and that the red button on the back is an emergency shutoff switch.

-Camera disable/defeat

Thinking low-tech the first choice is to get paint to obscure the camera. In an urban environment this would best be performed from an elevated position with a large volume of high viscosity paint. The intent is to fully coat the cameras or sensors in a way that the removal of the paint would damage or degrade the camera.

The 2020 Pro-Democracy riots in Hong Kong showcased the use of high-powered lasers to obstruct or damage digital camera reticles. Since then, in depth studies have been conducted on the tactic and have determined that at less than 50’ lasers effectively block vision and can create “black spots” in the reticle. -Mechanical Disablement

If patrols occur in predictable patterns this may allow you to emplace traps. Think of ways you can snare, entangle, or encumber the machine. Some suggestions:

-Trip lines

-Snares

-Large Fishing Hooks with drag weights

-Pitfalls

-Dead Falls

-Electrical Disablement

OSINT material reveals that the machines computers are place high and center within the center chassis and are cooled by at least 4 fans on the front and rear of the electrical box. It is assumed that large amounts of water intrusion in these areas would damage the electrical system.

Exploded diagrams also depict the battery to be placed on the bottom center of the chassis. Further analysis will be needed to see if this battery can be quickly removed.

-Electromagnetic Attack

Other considerations:

If attempting to recover a Q-UGV assume that it is GPS tracked by its operator, do not attempt to recover a robot that is still receiving power and which still has functioning GPS equipment.

Any condition outside of normal operating conditions will likely alert the machines operator. Assume that authorities will be in route to the machines location the moment you attempt to disable it.
